Maintained by Justin | Bangkok-based, 9 years in Southeast Asia | Updated as rules change
What this is: A living tracker of visa and entry rules for the five countries digital nomads actually base in: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia (Bali), Malaysia, and the Philippines. Visa rules in this region change constantly, and outdated guides get people deported. This page is updated whenever the rules move. Bookmark it, and check the changelog below before you book anything.
Recent Changes
Most recent first. Red dots are active enforcement changes or rules that affect whether you can legally do what you came to do.
July 2026 ยท Thailand
The cabinet-approved cut of visa-free stays from 60 days back to 30 days is still awaiting Royal Gazette publication and is not yet in force. The 60-day exemption remains available at the border for now, but treat it as temporary and watch this space.
April 2026 ยท Indonesia (Bali)
Bali launched the Dharma Dewata immigration task force, actively enforcing against foreign content creators and remote workers on tourist visas. Sponsored posts, brand deals, and even unpaid barter now count as illegal work. Penalties reach deportation and multi-year entry bans. If your trip involves paid content, get a C5A or E33G first.
2026 ยท Vietnam
The 90-day multiple-entry e-visa remains the workhorse for nomads. Overstay fines were raised to a maximum of VND 40,000,000 (around 1,500 USD) with tighter enforcement. Still no dedicated digital nomad visa.
Ongoing ยท Malaysia
Foreign-sourced income exemption for residents runs through 31 December 2026, which keeps the DE Rantau nomad pass effectively tax-friendly for now. The MDAC digital arrival card is mandatory for all arrivals.
June 2025 ยท Philippines
The Philippines launched its dedicated Digital Nomad Visa under Executive Order No. 86: 12 months, renewable once, minimum income around 24,000 USD, no local tax on foreign income. Tourist extensions up to 36 months also remain available.
Golden rule across the whole region: tourist visas and visa-free entry are for leisure only. None of them authorise work, including remote work for overseas clients. Enforcement was historically light, but Indonesia has changed that in 2026. If you are working, use a work-authorised visa.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Southeast Asian country has the easiest digital nomad visa?
Malaysia's DE Rantau Nomad Pass has the lowest income bar for tech workers at 24,000 USD per year and is renewable. Thailand's DTV is the most flexible for long, multiple-entry stays. The Philippines and Indonesia also have dedicated nomad visas, each with their own income and documentation requirements.
Can I legally work remotely on a tourist visa in Southeast Asia?
Officially no. Tourist visas and visa-free entry across the region are for leisure only and do not authorise work, even remote work for overseas clients. Enforcement has historically been light, but Indonesia began actively enforcing against remote workers and content creators on tourist visas in 2026. Use a proper nomad visa for anything work-related.
Which Southeast Asian country is cracking down on digital nomads in 2026?
Indonesia. Since April 2026, Bali's Dharma Dewata immigration task force has actively targeted foreign content creators and remote workers operating on tourist visas, treating sponsored posts and even unpaid barter as illegal work, with penalties up to deportation and multi-year entry bans.
Do digital nomad visas in Southeast Asia make you pay local tax?
Generally not on foreign-sourced income, provided you stay under the local tax-residency threshold, usually 183 days. Malaysia and the Philippines exempt foreign income for nomad-visa holders, and holders are typically not treated as tax residents. Always confirm your home-country obligations with a tax professional.
How often is this Southeast Asia visa tracker updated?
It is updated whenever a significant visa or entry rule changes in any of the five countries covered, usually within days. The last-updated date is shown at the top of the page, and the changelog lists every recent change in date order.
